Mehatlatch Adventure Trail: Adventures with Native Guides

Mehatl Hiking: Hut-to-Hut - coming soon...

The Mehatl Cascades is one of the most amazing wilderness day hikes available anywhere. Starting below the confluence of Mehatl Creek and the Nahatlatch river, we follow a trail through ancient forests of cedar, fir, pine and spruce for 5 Km. Our reward is a beautiful series of cascading waterfalls dropping over 200 feet in a thundering roar of whitewater and mist.

This hike is suitable for all ages, though participants should be in good condition and be prepared to hike in a wilderness setting. Starting at an elevation of just over 1,000 feet, the hike gains an altitude of about 500 feet. The Mehatl Creek is the largest tributary of the Nahatlatch and in the late-summer heat, it provides about 75% of the flow of the Nahatlatch. This is because the headwaters of the Mehatl flow from ice and snowfields above 8,000 feet.

The Mehatl hike is perfect for youth and school groups and can be combined with the scenic float for an amazing educational and experiential learning retreat. We provide two trip leaders per trip, one at the front and one at the back of the group. With large groups, one adult per 12 students is recommended. The return hike takes about 4 hours plus 2 hours of travel time from REO. When combined with the scenic float trip allow 9 hours for both activities. This is the ultimate one-day experiential and educational tour near Vancouver.

Upper Nahatlatch Scenic Raft Float Trip

This trip is a gentle float (no rapids) through one of British Columbia's newest provincial parks. This trip is ideal for children, families and corporate team building. This trip features stunning mountain peaks and glaciers, ancient forests, waterfalls and wildlife. The raft float is a popular Club REO activity and a perfect addition to the Mehatl Creek Cascades hike. Families, youth groups and corporations enjoy the float trip as it can be shared by all ages, and does not require previous experience. The scenic float trip is an excellent experiential adventure activity with educational and environmental values.

Canoeing

Available: May - September

Canoeing trips are perfect for all families of all ages. We have three sections of the river and lakes that we use for our flat water paddling adventures.

The main option is Hannah lake which features 11 km of easy lake paddling. The mountain and forest views are spectacular.

A second option is Francis Lake, the last lake prior to the notorious whitewater section of the lower Nahatlatch. The nice advantage of Francis Lake is that the river enters at the top with some excellent moving water we call the feeder current.

A final section that involves moving current (mostly Class I) is the upper Nahatlatch below Mehatl Creek. This beautiful section is where we conduct our scenic float trips.
